Welcome “BACK” To The Office!

welcome back to the office

Sorry for the cheap pun, but now that it’s time to return to the office, we’ve got some important information regarding good posture habits! Many people are excited to see coworkers in person and return to a more “normal” schedule. However, returning to the office can cause some unexpected back pain problems. After a few years of perfecting a posture-supporting setup at home, using less-than-desirable old office equipment is not ideal for spinal health.

Working at a computer all day with poor posture and run-of-the-mill furniture can cause abnormal wearing of your joints. It can also decrease muscle efficiency leading to pain, discomfort, and lessened mobility; this begs the question: what can you do to promote back health and reduce pain if you don’t have the right office furniture to support you?

How Can You Improve Your Back Health At Work?

Improving your back health at work doesn’t require a singular action; instead – you need to work on improving your back health with multiple strategies. Making small changes to your workspace and how you work can do wonders for your long-term back health.

  1. Pay attention to your posture: Make sure you stand up straight and don’t slouch when you’re standing. When sitting, keep your feet flat on the floor and relax your shoulders as you keep your back against the chair. Do not attempt to support yourself without the chair’s backrest. The benefits of good posture cannot be overstated. Of course, it takes practice and repetition to make good posture a part of your muscle memory.
  1. Keep moving: Even if your job requires you to sit at your desk for most of the day, you don’t have to remain completely sedentary. Consider standing up to stretch or walk around when you can. Stretching also releases endorphins and increases blood flow to all of your muscles, bettering your mood.
  1. Make modifications to your workspace: If you can modify your personal workspace when you return to the office, you should do so. Purchasing an ergonomic office chair will ensure that you have lumbar support and enough room to keep a good posture; it’s not a silver bullet answer to back pain, but it can help. Alternatively, you can purchase a standing desk, which has been proven to reduce back and neck pain.
