Acupuncture for Plantar Fasciitis – Does it Help?

Acupuncture for Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a painful, bothersome, and sometimes nearly-debilitating condition. For people who like being physical, whether that’s sports clubs or hiking, plantar fasciitis halts any type of fun activity.

Your overall mental and physical health can feel stunted when you’re not able to do the things you’re passionate about. Thankfully, promising studies have shown that acupuncture for plantar fasciitis may be an effective treatment option for people suffering.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the thick band of tissue at the bottom of your foot gets inflamed. Since it connects to your heel bone, it can cause a stabbing pain that makes it difficult to walk. Also known as “runner’s heel,” people who put a lot of pressure on their feet have a higher chance of developing plantar fasciitis. Middle-aged adults, people with complex foot structures, or people who are overweight also have a chance of experiencing heel pain.

If left untreated, plantar fasciitis can result in chronic heel pain. When this happens, your body will naturally try to accommodate the aching foot. Thus, an unusual walking pattern can cause more chronic pain in your hip, foot, knee, or back. Plantar fasciitis can be the catalyst for other issues to develop all over the body.

Research

Research conducted on people with plantar fasciitis has shown promising results with acupuncture treatment. One study found that a group of people treated with acupuncture experienced significantly less pain over a month. As always, more studies need to prove these findings. Even so, it means that acupuncture for plantar fasciitis has positive potential.

Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture is a traditional and commonly-practiced treatment option for people living with chronic pain or illness. It was first practiced in China and Japan and evolved into modern acupuncture.

Acupuncturists spend years studying acupoints and meridians in the body. The process involves the insertion of small needles in certain parts of the body to relieve pain, stimulate the nervous system, and promote blood flow.

Non-Insertive Acupuncture

It’s understandable if you don’t feel comfortable with insertive acupuncture, especially when it comes to needles. Thankfully, there are other forms of acupuncture that have their own unique healing properties. Non-insertive acupuncture treatments include tui na, gua sha, acupressure therapy, cupping, and magnetic therapy.
